The Jury of the International Architectural Competition is composed of eleven members. They are:
His Excellency the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Lebanon or his Representative Mr. Frederic Husseini
Mr. Husseini was born in 1957. He graduated from the School of Architecture of “Marseille-Luminy” and has worked in France as architect and contractor. He returned to Lebanon in 1991 where he embarked in the industry. He was appointed in 2000 as Director General of Antiquities in the Ministry of Culture. The General Directorate of Antiquities is the public administration responsible for the protection of archaeological heritage and built heritage. It manages all archaeological sites and museums. As such, he is a member of the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO, the Higher Council of Quarries and Vice-President of the International Council of Museums section in Lebanon. He is also an observer at the Higher Council of Urbanism.
The Representative of the Sultanate of Oman, Mr. Said Harith al Barashdi
Mr. Al-Barashdi is Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (1991) from the University of Portland – Oregon (USA). He has worked for ministry of foreign Affairs in the Sultanate of Oman as director of projects and has been involved with other consultants in the design of Oman Embassy buildings in Riyadh, New Delhi, Berlin, Egypt, and Beirut. In 2004 he was transferred to Oman Embassy in Beirut as Deputy Chief of Mission. Mr. Al-Barashdi is married and has four children.
The Representative of the Orders of Engineers and Architects of Lebanon, Mr. Assem Salam
Born in Beirut in 1924, Mr. Salam studied architecture at Cambridge University where he graduated with an MA. He opened his own practice in Beirut in 1954 where he works. He is President of the Organization of Arab Architects and has been President of the Lebanese Order of Architects and Engineers between 1995 and 1999. Assem Salam has also held several public functions: Member of the Higher Council of Planning (1961-1977), member of the Higher Council of Urban Planning (1964-1978 & 1995-1999), Member of the Housing Council (1965-1970), Member Council of Development and Reconstruction (1977-1983), Vice President of the Commission of the Port of Beirut (1972-1986), Member of the Commission for the Reconstruction of Beirut Central District (1977-1986). He has also been professor of architectural design at the American University of Beirut and at the Arab University in Beirut. He is founding member and past president of the Association for the Preservation of Natural Sites and Old Buildings [APSAD] Beirut, Ex Member of the Sursock Museum Committee, President of the « Commission Libanaise pour la Sauvegarde de Venise » 1972, Founding member of the Urban Research Institute – Beirut. He has published notably “Urban Problems in Beirut & the Outskirts” 1967; “The Reconstruction of Beirut Central District and the Missed Opportunity” 1992; “Reconstruction & Public Interests - Architecture and the City” 1995.
He is Commendatore dell “Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana” and holds the OSELLA en Or de la Societa Dante Alighieri 1972
The Representative of the Lebanese Company for the Development and Reconstruction of Beirut Central District (SOLIDERE), Mr. Angus Gavin
Mr. Gavin is Head of the Urban Development Division of SOLIDERE, responsible for urban design, planning and development control, for Beirut City Center and external projects that Solidere International is undertaking in the MENA and Mediterranean regions. Before joining SOLIDERE in 1994 he was leader of Dar Al-Handasah’s planning team, for the Master Plan of Beirut’s 191Ha city center. He has practiced as an architect and urban planner in the Middle East, UK, USA, Turkey, Greece and West Africa, and has taught at the University of Virginia, USA and University College, London. Before moving to Beirut in 1992 he was with the London Docklands Development Corporation as Head of Urban Design and a Development Manager for the 120Ha Royal Docks. He has an MA in architecture from Cambridge and a Masters in Urban Design from Harvard. He was joint author of ‘Beirut Reborn: the Restoration and Development of the Central District’, John Wiley Academy Editions, London, 1996.
Ms. Magda Mostapha, Architect (Egypt), representative of the International Union of Architects (UIA)
Assistant Professor at the Department of Architectural Engineering (Cairo University) and an Affiliate Assistant Professor at the Construction and Architectural Engineering as well as the Performing and Visual Arts Departments at the American University in Cairo, Ms. Mostapha holds a PhD in architecture from Cairo University. In 2004, with Progressive Architects, she completed designing the Advance school for children with autism in Cairo, which was presented at the World Congress on Autism in 2006. It is the first building based on her "sensory design" theory. She works as special needs design consultant for government and private sector projects in Egypt, the Gulf and Europe. Nominated for the 2005 UNESCO Prize for Research and Training in Special Needs Education for Children, she was chosen as President of the UIA's International Student Competition Jury (2008).
Mr. Suha Özkan, Architect, Historian and Theorist (Turkey)
Mr. Özkan has undertaken extensive research on the theory and history of architecture, design, vernacular form and has published numerous articles and monographs. He has taught and lectured in many universities in Turkey (Middle East Technical University) and abroad. He has served as jury members for many architectural competitions, and as an external examiner for diploma and doctoral assessments at the Schools of Architecture at the Universities of Paris, Lausanne, York and Trondheim. Mr. Özkan was Deputy Secretary General (1982-1990) then Secretary General of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (1990-2002). He was a Council Member of UIA between 2002 and 2008. Presently he is the Chairman of the World Architecture Community.
Ms. Momoyo Kaijima, Atelier Bow Wow (Japan)
Ms. Kajima holds graduate degrees from Japan Women's University, the Graduate School of Tokyo Institute of Technology and the Post-graduate school of Tokyo Institute of Technology. She is an Assistant professor at the University of Tsukuba and was Visiting Faculty at Harvard in 2003 and Guest Professor at the ETH in Zurich from 2005 to 2007. With her husband Yoshiharu Tsukamoto she established in 1992 the Tokyo based Bow Wow Architect Studio www.bow-wow.jp
Ms. Izaskun Chinchilla, Architect (Spain)
Ms. Chinchilla is a graduate architect (2001) from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain). She is driving her own office since 2001 www.izaskunchinchilla.es in Madrid and she has been teaching Design Subjects in the University of Alicante (Escuela de Arquitectura Universidad de Alicante) and in Madrid University (Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura Universidad Politécnica de Madrid).
Mr. Okwui Enwezor (Nigeria), Dean of Academic Affairs and Senior Vice President at San Francisco Art Institute (USA)
Mr. Enwezor is Adjunct Curator at the International Center of Photography, (New York) and previously Adjunct Curator of Contemporary Art, at the Art Institute of Chicago. He is the founder and editor of the critical art journal Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art published by the Africana Study Center, Cornell University; and has held academic appointments as Visiting Professor in Art History in many universities (University of Pittsburgh, Columbia University, New York, etc.). Mr. Enwezor is the Artistic Director of the 7th Gwangju Biennale (2008) and was the Artistic Director of Documenta 11, Kassel, Germany (1998-2002) and of the 2nd Johannesburg Biennale (1996-1998). He has also served as the Artistic Director of 2nd International Biennial of Contemporary Art, Seville, Spain (2005-2007). He was awarded the Peter Norton Foundation Curatorial Award (1998) and received the Agnes Gund Curatorial Award from Independent Curators International in (2007). In 2006, he was honored with the Frank Jewett Mather Award for Distinction in Criticism by the College Art Association.
Mr. Mozart Chahine (Deputy Member - Lebanon)
Mr. Chahine was born in Beirut. He studied at the Jesuits College in Beirut (Saint Joseph University) and, after working in the family business, opened his own music company in 1966. It developed into stores and a distribution office in Beirut, a branch in Damascus and an exhibition hall and a music school in Jal El Dib, a suburb in the north of Beirut. Mr. Chahine imports, distributes and sells musical instruments, music books CDs and DVDs. He is also in the publishing and music production, disks and partitions, under the label Mozart Chahine and Byblos Records then Mozart Chahine the Phoenix. He allocates all the royalties of his label, The Phoenix, to scholarships for young talented Lebanese. He collaborates with and assists the Order of Malta and the Association of St. Vincent de Paul.
Mr. László Földes architect (Deputy Member - Hungary)
Mr. László Földes studied architecture at the Technical University of Budapest. After that he held a scholarship at the Helsinki University of Technology. One year later, in 1989 he returned to Finland to work in the Järvinen-Airas architect studio. He founded his own architectural firm in 1994. His most important works include the Forest School in Visegrád (with G. Turányi), the gymnasium of Toldy High School near the Buda Castle, W.E.T. Innovation Center in Pilisszentiván (with L. Petho) and Courthouse in Debrecen (with J. Koller). First time in the world he built in his dwelling house at Szilas-brook, Budapest the "light transmitting concrete" (LiTraCon) invented by Áron Losonczi. He was elected to the UIA Council on the General Assembly in Turin, Italy in 2008.
